About Fire Extinguishers

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

As fire season is coming up it is a good idea to refresh your knowledge about fire extinguishers.

First thing to ask yourself and those within your household is...Do you have a fire extinguisher? If so, where is it located?

Second, is your fire extinguisher up to date? It is important to check if it is expired.

Third, do you know how to use the fire extinguisher? Even if you do, it is good to refresh your memory by reading the instructions.

In case of an emergency, having knowledge of how to use your specific fire extinguisher is important. Not all fire extinguishers are the same, make sure to read your own fire extinguisher instructions. There are four basic steps to follow with a standard foam model. You can remember them with the acronym PASS:

  • P—Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher.
  • A—Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the          fire. Keep a safe distance away.
  • S—Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing materials.
  • S—Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
