Different Types of Water Losses You May Encounter
5/16/2022 (Permalink)
During water restoration, our teams of professionals come to your water loss and assess which category of water damage has occurred. Below you will see the different categories of water losses:
- Category 1: Is water from a clean source, such as a clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon factors such as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
- Category 2: Has a significant level of contamination. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- Category 3: Is grossly unsanitary/contaminated water, could be a sewage backup. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
If you encounter a water loss in your home or business, SERVPRO of East Portland is available 24/7 to assist with any water restoration needs!
Water Damage: Equipment SERVPRO Uses
5/16/2022 (Permalink)
What is a moisture meter? When you come across a bursting pipe or water machine overflow, SERVPRO is a phone call away to assess the water damage. One way SERVPRO assesses water losses is with moisture meters.
Moisture Meters are utilized to determine the actual moisture content of different materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing us to monitor the drying process.
Another tool that SERVPRO uses while inspecting water losses is Thermohygrometers. Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. SERVPRO can calculate and establish an environment most conducive to drying. With this tool, we ensure saturated materials are drying to industry standard.
Water damages come in all sizes small and large. It does not matter the size of the water damage as long as the water is detected and taken care of properly. SERVPRO uses technology that helps our crews determine where moisture is after a water loss.
Detecting Water Damage

Whether a property is five years old, fifty years old, or brand new, it’s always important to look for red flags indicating signs of possible home damage that need restoration before making your final decision. Nobody wants to make the mistake of buying a home, only to discover hidden problems later on that require expensive restoration services and maintenance.
An important thing to look for when buying a property is:
A poor foundation can cost homeowners thousands of dollars to correct, making it one of the most expensive fixes you could potentially have. Be sure the walls, door frames, and the house itself aren’t leaning in any way or cracked. Also, be sure to check if the yard and other land around the home slopes toward it. If it does slope, that could be a big indicator of damage – water can easily run and collect at the foundation of the house causing severe water damage and compromising its structural integrity.
Mold in Your Business
8/5/2021 (Permalink)
Mold in your building may be the least of your worries while operating your commercial business in East Portland. It is important to keep in mind that some mold, over time, may cause structural damage to materials such as wood, furnishings, and finishes.
One thing to keep in mind that can help with detection of mold is tracking shared refrigerators. While other people will remember to clear out their leftovers, others won’t. Old food storage containers are a perfect breeding ground for mold. Over time, mold can travel to the shelving and even outside the refrigerator. Consider instituting an office refrigerator policy. If something is left in the fridge by a certain time each week, it goes in the garbage.
SERVPRO of East Portland is a phone call away for any mold inspection services.

It is very important to be prepared for any disaster to protect yourself, family/friends, and business. One way to prepare yourself from a disaster is by having weather safety equipment available at any time. For example, a NOAA Weather Radio is a reliable source for weather alerts. It is a good idea to have one in your home and/or office. This weather radio is made to alert you when tornadoes, hurricanes, and other disasters are coming your way. This weather radio uses WEA technology which is wireless emergency alerts to accurately discover disasters in your area.
If your home or business experiences any structural or content damage from a disaster, SERVPRO of East Portland is prepared 24/7 to assist with any restoration needs.

The Air Mover VS the Fan
1/14/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of East Portland wants to get your property dry and back to normal as quickly and efficiently as possible. One of the best ways to dry a water damage is using air movers. Wait. Isn’t an air mover just a fan? In a way, yes, it is. But it actually blows air at a stronger and faster rate than a regular household fan.
Our air movers are designed to perform on any size loss, commercial and residential. Depending on the severity of the water damage, different styles of air movers are used. Commercial properties typically require multiple styles of air movers.
Airflow is one of the most important aspects of drying a structure correctly. Air movers are designed with that in mind. If you blow air directly into a wet wall, you will only be pushing more moisture deeper into the wall. Air movers are made to be angled and work with the science of drying to push the air along the structure to carry the moisture away and dry it. You cannot accomplish that with a regular house fan.
A household fan is designed for cooling off environments. The airflow from it will be straight on (pushing the moisture further into the structure), and not as strong. When the airflow is that low it will take longer to dry, risking mold growth.
