Detecting Water Damage

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

Whether a property is five years old, fifty years old, or brand new, it’s always important to look for red flags indicating signs of possible home damage that need restoration before making your final decision. Nobody wants to make the mistake of buying a home, only to discover hidden problems later on that require expensive restoration services and maintenance.

An important thing to look for when buying a property is:

A poor foundation can cost homeowners thousands of dollars to correct, making it one of the most expensive fixes you could potentially have. Be sure the walls, door frames, and the house itself aren’t leaning in any way or cracked. Also, be sure to check if the yard and other land around the home slopes toward it. If it does slope, that could be a big indicator of damage – water can easily run and collect at the foundation of the house causing severe water damage and compromising its structural integrity.

Mold in Your Business

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

Mold in your building may be the least of your worries while operating your commercial business in East Portland. It is important to keep in mind that some mold, over time, may cause structural damage to materials such as wood, furnishings, and finishes.

One thing to keep in mind that can help with detection of mold is tracking shared refrigerators. While other people will remember to clear out their leftovers, others won’t. Old food storage containers are a perfect breeding ground for mold. Over time, mold can travel to the shelving and even outside the refrigerator. Consider instituting an office refrigerator policy. If something is left in the fridge by a certain time each week, it goes in the garbage.

SERVPRO of East Portland is a phone call away for any mold inspection services.

Residential Fires

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

Preventative maintenance is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of a residential structure fire, and this is especially true in the case of clothing dryers.  The US Fire Administration reports that an average of 2,900 dryer fires occur each year, amounting to nearly $35 million worth of property damage loss, and that failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of these fires.  Keep yourself and your property safe by following these tips on dryer maintenance:

  • Make sure that your clothes dryer is installed according to manufacturer specifications. Improper wiring can cause an electrical fire.
  • Clean out the lint filter after each cycle. This allows the proper air flow through the machine, and the removal of the lint limits the amount of material available to burn if a fire did start.

SERVPRO of East Portland is available 24/7 to assist with any fire restoration needs!

Storms in East Portland

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

While Portland experiences its fair share of sunny days throughout the year, it also brings days with many rainstorms. By dumping a high volume of water in a relatively short amount of time, it’s important to take precautionary measures to prevent any damage being done to your home from these storms.

One measure you can take is cleaning out your home’s gutters after a storm hits, and you can do it in three easy steps:

First, start by scooping out debris.Find a ladder and securely place it against your home so you are able to reach the gutters comfortably. Start at the end closest to the drain outlet and gradually work your way to the other end, removing loose debris as you go.

SERVPRO of East Portland we make it “Like it never even happened.”

About Fire Extinguishers

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

As fire season is coming up it is a good idea to refresh your knowledge about fire extinguishers.

First thing to ask yourself and those within your household is...Do you have a fire extinguisher? If so, where is it located?

Second, is your fire extinguisher up to date? It is important to check if it is expired.

Third, do you know how to use the fire extinguisher? Even if you do, it is good to refresh your memory by reading the instructions.

In case of an emergency, having knowledge of how to use your specific fire extinguisher is important. Not all fire extinguishers are the same, make sure to read your own fire extinguisher instructions. There are four basic steps to follow with a standard foam model. You can remember them with the acronym PASS:

  • P—Pull the pin on the fire extinguisher.
  • A—Aim the nozzle or hose at the base of the          fire. Keep a safe distance away.
  • S—Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing materials.
  • S—Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

Hot Summers and Deadly Fires

Summer is a great time to do outdoor activities with friends and family. Summer from the West to the East coast consists of camping trips, beach trips, barbeques, and spending time by the pool or river. It is great to have fun, but always keep safety protocols on top of the mind to help ensure you have fun in the sun while being safe.

According to the United States Fire Administration, nearly 8,600 Americans are injured by fireworks and almost 5,000 are injured by grill fires, annually. A grill should always be supervised when in use. Keep children and pets a safe distance from the grilling area to prevent accidental burns or tipping of the grill.

Water Damage in All Shapes and Sizes

7/21/2021 (Permalink)

According to the National Weather Service (NOAA), “Approximately seventy five percent of all Presidential disaster declarations are associated with flooding.” NOAA lists the most common flood hazards in the United States as:

  • Flash Flooding
  • River Flooding
  • Storm Surge and Coastal Inundation from Tropical and Non-Tropical Systems
  • Burn Scars/Debris Flows (Caused by Wildfires)
  • Ice/Debris Jams
  • Snowmelt
  • Dry Wash (Caused by heavy rainfall in dry areas)
  • Dam Breaks/Levee Failure

Just because you haven’t experienced a flood doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $3.5 billion in annual losses in the U.S., and commercial flood claims average more than $75,000 (NFIP).

What happens after you have a Flood

Water Damage Tips:

  1. Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  2. Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  3. Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping or placing towels.
  4. Move any art items, electronics, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to water to a safe place.
  5. Remove books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.
  6. Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  7. Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where the ceiling is starting to bubble or coming down.

Categories of Water Damage

5/10/2021 (Permalink)

When your property encounters a tragedy such as water damage, it is important to call your local SERVPRO to get the water restoration process going. Untreated water damages can easily spread, creating both the potential for mold or bacteria growth and structural and contents damage. When our crew arrives at the water loss, we perform an inspection. During the inspection we determine what category of water is the particular loss.

  • Category 1: is water from a clean source, such as a clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon factors such as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
  • Category 2: has a significant level of contamination. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
  • Category 3: is grossly unsanitary/contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

How SERVPRO Detects Water Damage

5/10/2021 (Permalink)

Water damages come in all sizes small and large. It does not matter the size of the water damage as long as the water is detected and taken care of properly. SERVPRO uses technology that helps our crews determine where moisture is after a water loss. If the water loss is not inspected properly, a small water loss overlooked can conclude in a large loss, resulting in mold. Here are a few tools SERVPRO of East Portland uses to detect and find hidden moisture:

  • Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards/trims and drywall-walls.
  • Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. SERVPRO can calculate and establish an environment most conducive to drying.
  • Moisture Meters are utilized to determine the actual moisture content of different materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing us to monitor the drying process.

Like any fungus, mold sprouts from spores. Those spores are usually free-floating in your environment at all times, and only need a catalyst to grow into an active fungus infestation. That catalyst is water in any form, whether it be a puddle or humidity in the air.

  •  Mold... grows on organic surfaces

This can include food and plant matter, but you would be surprised what else is considered "organic." This includes the drywall of your walls and ceilings, as well as wooden floorboards and furniture upholstery.

  •   Mold... doesn't always start off black

Black mold can start as gray, green, white, or yellow, before darkening through stages to brown and then black.

Mold Remediation

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

If your home or business has water damage or mold, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, to make your property "Like it never even happened."

Water Damage Causes

2/11/2020 (Permalink)

Weather incidents account for more than half of all homeowner’s insurance claims, with wind, pipes freezing and bursting, roof and flashing leaks and ice dams among the major causes of home damage during weather events.

That’s according to The Travelers Companies Inc., which released information identifying the most common and costliest homeowners’ claims based on a review of its U.S. homeowners insurance claims made from2009 to 2015.

Weather cannot be controlled, but other homeowner insurance claims can be reduced. Water Damage makes up 20% of all homeowner insurance claims. There are typically two main causes of water damage — weather events, such as rain or snow melt, and other issues, such as pipes bursting or leaking. By comparison, more water damage is caused by events such as a pipe bursting, or plumbing or appliance issues, than from the weather.

Two ways homeowners can reduce water damage claims is to winterize their pipes by properly wrapping them and changing water supply lines to appliances and toilets that show wear.

Should you have any questions about water damage prevention or have water damage call SERVPRO of East Portland at (971) 279-2420.

What is Smoke?

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

We all know smoke, we have seen it coming from our fireplaces, or even smelt it when driving past a fire. But what is smoke? When something is on fire, it begins to decompose. As it is decomposing it will release solid particles, gases and aerosols. A Fire and Water Clean up and Restoration company is immediately needed to start the cleaning process.

SERVPRO of East Portland understands the dangerous outcomes of a fire. Our crews are IICRC trained and fast responding when it comes to fires.

One of the items our crews look out for is soot. When the smoke settles onto surfaces, the particles become a buildup that is viewed as soot. Soot contains various types of acids that can cause staining and consumption whenever left excessively long on materials.

At SERVPRO of East Portland our technicians are prepared to recognize and clean a wide range of smoke and their deposits.

How to Prevent Damage to your Home

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

The winter of 2020 is upon us and planning ahead could prevent damage to your house and having to call SERVPRO of East Portland. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends taking the following steps to protect your most valuable asset:

  • Insulate any water lines that run along exterior walls so your water supply will be less likely to freeze.
  • Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows.
  • Insulate walls and attic.
  • Install storm or thermal pane windows or cover windows with plastic from
    the inside.
  • Repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on your home

The Air Mover VS the Fan

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of East Portland wants to get your property dry and back to normal as quickly and efficiently as possible. One of the best ways to dry a water damage is using air movers. Wait. Isn’t an air mover just a fan? In a way, yes, it is. But it actually blows air at a stronger and faster rate than a regular household fan.

Our air movers are designed to perform on any size loss, commercial and residential. Depending on the severity of the water damage, different styles of air movers are used. Commercial properties typically require multiple styles of air movers.

Airflow is one of the most important aspects of drying a structure correctly. Air movers are designed with that in mind. If you blow air directly into a wet wall, you will only be pushing more moisture deeper into the wall. Air movers are made to be angled and work with the science of drying to push the air along the structure to carry the moisture away and dry it. You cannot accomplish that with a regular house fan.

A household fan is designed for cooling off environments. The airflow from it will be straight on (pushing the moisture further into the structure), and not as strong. When the airflow is that low it will take longer to dry, risking mold growth.

Freddy gets a Shower

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

She asked him not to put the toilet in himself. She had a plumber in mind, they would just have to wait until she got back from her trip. He meant well, he really did. He wanted to surprise her and have it done before she got back. I don’t know why that meant he had to do it by himself, rather than call a plumber to come. But here we are, that is how I found myself dripping wet from a hose that was not attached properly.

He came into the bathroom in the middle of the night to find it flooded in a couple inches of water. Luckily, he remembered seeing a commercial for SERVPRO of East Portland earlier that day. A quick Google search he found the number to his local SERVPRO of East Portland Franchise right away. He was able to get the water turned off while we waited for SERVPRO of East Portland to arrive. I was honestly shocked that even at two in the morning they came out and were helping us!

He showed the SERVPRO of East Portland employee the bathroom, and the technician started getting to work immediately. After he looked around, and took some measurements he explained exactly what SERVPRO of East Portland was going to do step by step. First step was extracting all the standing water before they could put any drying equipment down. Once the water was removed, SERVPRO explained to him that he really needed to get a plumber out to fix the hose, so he didn’t end up with the bathroom flooded again.

It's been several days now; the plumber came out and installed the toilet correctly and SERVPRO of East Portland has been out every day to check to see if we are dry yet. We probably would have been dry by now, but he kept turning off the equipment at night. He said it was too loud, I didn’t mind the noise but then again, my ears are made of porcelain, so I can’t really hear anything. SERVPRO of East Portland  took the time to explain to him that if he keeps turning the equipment off it will take longer to dry, and he is risking getting mold. He decided he would just sleep on the couch to get away from the noise.

Once he left the equipment on, everything started drying and it should all be done by tomorrow! She is coming home the next day and SERVPRO of East Portland will be able to have everything back to normal before she even steps foot in the house! He really didn’t want her to have to live with the mess of his screwup, so it was great SERVPRO of East Portland was able to come in and handle it all so quickly. “Like it never even happened.”

Cleaning up after a fire

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damaged furniture.

Many homeowners think that they can clean-up smoke damage to their home after it has been burned in a fire. Unfortunately, that is never a good idea. Cleaning up smoke and soot damage requires professionals to do the job.

Bring in the Fire Damage Pros

First off, a house that has been burned in a fire is typically not safe to enter or spend time in. The integrity of walls and floors may have been damaged, along with other hazards. It’s important not to enter the home until professionals tell you it is safe to do so.

While you should not undertake trying to clean up smoke and soot damage from a house fire yourself, you should get the professionals into your as soon as possible. Ash and smoke, if left untreated, will cause corrosion, discoloration and a lingering powerful and offensive odor. Ash, specifically, will start causing damage and discoloration almost immediately and the damage may be permanent and irreversible. Anything that was made of plastic will begin discoloring within minutes. Metals will easily tarnish and corrode and fiberglass will begin to yellow.

If you get fire damage restoration professionals in soon enough after a house fire, they can mitigate or eliminate the smoke and ash damage from the fire and prevent further damage to your property. Unfortunately, if you don’t get the pros in early, the damage becomes worse and worse and the costs to repair will begin to skyrocket within just a few weeks!

What a Trained and Certified Fire Damage Restoration Professional Does

A trained and certified fire damage restoration professional will first identify all affected materials and the source of odors, if possible. They will be extremely thorough. They will identify what can be salvaged and cleaned and what cannot be and must be completely replaced. They will then begin the clean-up process by removing built-up ash residue. Once the ash is cleaned, they can better identify the sources of odors, which they will treat with special detergents made to neutralize the odors. Once fire damaged materials are treated, they will be sealed to prevent future odors from emitting into your home.

Contact SERVPRO of East Portland at (971)279-2420. We are here to help you throughout your fire restoration process.

Mold Facts

1. Mold is a fungus

Like any fungus, mold sprouts from spores. Those spores are usually free-floating in your environment at all times, and only need a catalyst to grow into an active fungus infestation. That catalyst is water in any form, whether it be a puddle or humidity in the air.

2. Mold grows on organic surfaces

This can include food and plant matter, but you would be surprised what else is considered "organic." This includes the drywall of your walls and ceilings, as well as wooden floorboards and furniture upholstery.

3. Black mold doesn't always start off black

Black mold can start as gray, green, white, or yellow, before darkening through stages to brown and then black.

4. Mold is not the same as mildew

Mold and mildew are two different types of fungus. They can be differentiated by color, texture, and growth patterns. Mold is fuzzy and thick, while mildew has a soft, powdery texture.

5. Mold can often only be detected by trained professionals

Certified mold remediation specialists at SERVPRO of East Portland can identify mold that isn't apparent to the naked eye. Call SERVPRO to help you develop strategies for mold prevention and cleanup.

Fire Damage Restoration for East Portland

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

Fire prevention in your East Portland home is almost entirely about fire prevention. As a fire burns, it consumes and damages everything that it comes into contact with, or even gets close to. The tendrils of soot and smoke travel throughout your home and do their damage. The best way to protect your property from fire is to practice fire prevention.

When your home in East Portland has experienced a fire and fire damage of any size, it is essential to handle the cleanup and repair as soon as the fire is out. Settled smoke and soot is acidic and continues to do damage to your property until it is cleaned. That is why contacting us at SERVPRO is the right choice, as we work fast and efficiently to get your home restored to its condition before the fire.

Because of the smoke and soot left behind, once everything else is cleaned and repaired, SERVPRO techs also need to deodorize your home. Removing the debris and odor source is the first step. Then we can clean the surfaces which have odor-causing residues on them. We then distribute a deodorize to the affected surfaces to rid your home of the odors.

The first step to protecting your family and property is to install smoke alarms on each level of your home and inside bedrooms. These alarms should be tested each month, and if they are not working, change the batteries right away. Plan out and talk to your family about a fire escape plan and practice it two times a year. If a fire does occur, get out and stay out, then call for help. Do not ever go back inside for anyone or anything.

Kitchens are the most common room where fires start. When you are cooking, make sure you are alert. Stay in the kitchen while you are grilling, frying, broiling, or boiling food. If you are baking, simmering or roasting food, check on it regularly and stay in the kitchen while food is cooking. Use a timer to remind you that you have food cooking. Also make sure to keep anything which can catch fire such as wooden utensils, oven mitts, curtains, towels, or food packaging away from your stove top.

Make sure your home’s electrical system is up to date and well maintained. Proper maintenance needs to be done for fireplaces, chimneys, and furnaces as well, and make sure that any heating devices are used according to instructions.

SERVPRO of East Portland understands that fire and fire damage in your home in East Portland is stressful, and we strive to restore your home as quickly as we can. Once the fire is out, reach out to us by dialing (971)279-2420 so we can help you and your family get your safe home back.

Conditions In East Portland Might Be Right For Mold

12/4/2018 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of East Portland to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

East Portland Smoke and Soot Cleanup

5/22/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of East Portland will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
